‘Curiosity and Opportunity’ Lead to Successful Career with FOX
In 20 years of working for FOX, Joe Dorrego has witnessed the evolution of the media industry firsthand. From cable to streaming services to TikTok and YouTube, it isn’t breaking news that technology has completely changed the way we live.
Yet every day, broadcast stations across the country still go live with the news.
“The only constant is change,” Dorrego said. “One thing I learned early in my career is that diversifying your mindset allows you to adapt and grow with those changes.”
After graduating from Salisbury University’s accounting program, Dorrego spent several years at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC. There, he began to take an interest in other aspects of the business beyond his role in audit services. He interacted with people on other teams, asked questions and formed meaningful relationships.
What he didn’t realize at the time was that by interacting with people who were different from him, he was broadening his view – not just of the company, but the world.
“Without that curiosity, I wouldn’t have had the opportunities to build the career I have now,” Dorrego said.
After starting at News Corporation in 2004, Dorrego went on to work at Fox Corporation when the company split. He currently serves as chief operating officer and chief financial officer of FOX News Media. Fox News Channel has been No. 1 in cable news for 22 consecutive years and No. 1 in all cable for the past eight years.
“Any successful company has to have effective working relationships across all sectors,” Dorrego said. “I learned that in my first job, and I have continued to foster an appreciation for perspectives that differ from mine.”
The same applies for education. When Dorrego was an SU student, he took classes outside his major, which helped him understand there is more than one “right” way to think and live. Welcoming people and ideas that are different from you, he said, is the key to success.
Through that success, Dorrego hopes to share his insights to benefit current and future Sea Gulls by serving on the SU Foundation Board of Directors as its current secretary.
“Looking back on those four years [at SU], I’ve learned not to be so focused on the future that you don’t appreciate what you have today,” Dorrego said. “Stop and look around, and you’ll see the opportunities right in front of you.”
