Juneteenth: Salisbury University Commemorates Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Union soldiers arrived in Texas with news that the Civil War had ended and all slaves were then freed, marking the end of one of the most oppressive eras in American history. This Juneteenth, let us come together as a University community to honor the achievements and contributions of Black Americans throughout history.

At Salisbury University, we recognize that embracing diversity and fostering inclusion are crucial to creating a campus community that reflects our institution’s core values. As an institution of higher learning, we have an inherent responsibility to challenge systemic inequities, foster dialogue, and promote understanding. We must also reflect upon our shared responsibility to confront racism, prejudice, and discrimination in all its forms, ensuring that our campus remains a safe and inclusive space for all.

We invite you to engage in meaningful conversations, educational opportunities, and celebratory events throughout this Juneteenth season. Take this time to learn more about the experiences and contributions of Black Americans both past, and present. Together, we can foster a greater sense of unity, understanding, and solidarity, bringing us closer to the inclusive and equitable society we aspire to build.

Monday, June 19, is a full SU holiday for all students and employees in observance of Juneteenth. However you choose to spend the day, please join us in making an impact. There are multiple events taking place across our historic Eastern Shore communities, including a celebration in Downtown Salisbury. More information about these events can be found at https://www.esjuneteenth.com/. You can also learn more by visiting SU’s Juneteenth Resource Page.
