GULL (Gain Understanding as a Lifelong Learner) Week

Hello,

With the start of the semester nearly upon us, I wanted to make sure you don’t miss an important activity occurring on campus from September 11-18. A collaboration between the Faculty Senate’s University Academic Assessment Committee (UAAC) and the Office of University Analysis, Reporting and Assessment (UARA) has resulted in a weeklong assessment window called Gaining Understanding as a Lifelong Learner (GULL) Week. Surveys have revealed that faculty promotion and course-based incentives were the top reasons why students participate in GULL Week.

We are reaching out to faculty, staff and students to promote GULL Week as an exciting opportunity for students to show their school spirit by demonstrating how much they have achieved the skills and knowledge related SU’s General Education Student Learning Goals and Outcomes. The information gathered during GULL Week will be used to better understand the skills that students develop during their time at SU. In addition, the results will be used to enhance SU’s General Education program and show our accreditors that students are achieving SU’s General Education Student Learning Goals and Outcomes.

I have attached a flyer that you will soon see around campus. Also, the attached Go-to-Guide to GULL Week can be used by faculty to let students know what GULL Week is and encourage their participation. Some faculty are offering extra credit or other course-based incentives for student participation and all students receive a GULL Week t-shirt (while supplies last). We will happily provide you with a list of students enrolled in your course(s) that participated in GULL Week so that you can award credit. Please complete THIS FORMto request a GULL Week participant list for your course(s) and/or a t-shirt to promote GULL Week in your classes.

Starting the first week of classes, students will be able to sign up for an in-person or virtual testing session using their SU username and password using the link on the GULL Week web page. Students can participate in GULL Week in traditional, proctored sessions or virtually on any SU computer or personal laptop PC/Mac (no Chromebooks or tablets). Virtual GULLWeek assessments will be available in Canvas and accessible Monday-Monday, September 11-18. Students will follow the instructions in their GULL Week Canvas course to access and complete the assessments when it’s convenient for them.

If you have any questions about GULL Week or would like a printed copy of the flyer, please email GULLWeek@salisbury.edu.

Thank you for your continued support and have a wonderful semester!
