Have you ever wanted to read and have discussions about interesting books with people from different backgrounds than you? Are you interested in seeing our society from the perspective of people who are incarcerated? Are you open to a transformative educational experience?

If so, the Philosophy Department is looking for volunteers (students, faculty and staff) to meet with those who are incarcerated at Eastern Correctional Institution, a medium security prison near Princess Anne. Volunteers are vetted and provided training and will meet to choose books to discuss in small groups through the ECI Libraries. The Philosophy Department has partnered with ECI for over 20 years and former volunteers have found the experience to be fulfilling and life changing.

We will hold an interest meeting on September 6th at 3:30 in the Philosophy House. You can get more information, ask questions and meet with those who have participated in the past.

Students, if you are interested in learning more about the experience of incarcerated individuals, this is a great opportunity.

Faculty, if you teach upper division courses that relate to prisons, mass incarceration, criminal justice or associated professions, justice policy, prisons as public institutions, or if you teach classes that focus on critical reading and discussion skills, we are especially interested for you to announce this opportunity to students in your classes.
