Dear Colleagues,
For the first time, we will be able to award a scholarship from The Faculty Memorial Scholarship fund, established in Spring 2015, this January!
This is a call for nominations (Deadline October 10th) and an encouragement to nominate a student who meets the criteria below for the scholarship. The purpose of the scholarship, beyond just helping strong students, is to encourage students to consider graduate school and possibly joining our ranks, following in the footsteps of those the scholarship honors.
Nominations should be submitted in .doc, .docx, or .pdf files via email attachment to Kathleen Shannon: kmshannon@salisbury.edu. Nominations will receive a receipt of confirmation within 48 hours.
The email must contain the student’s name and SU ID number in the body of the email and the name of the file containing the nomination should be of the form: Laura Short 1040130.[doc/pdf]
The nomination should include a sentence similar to: “I am nominating Laura Short for the 2024 Faculty Memorial Scholarship. Additional information could make it more likely that the committee will choose your nominee.
Below is a description of the scholarship, eligibility and process. If you have any further questions, please email kmshannon@salisbury.edu.
The Faculty Memorial Scholarship in memory of former SU faculty in whose name $500 or more has been donated will be given annually to a deserving student who meets the following requirements:
Requirements for the nominee:
- Sophomore, Junior, or Senior status;
- 3.0 GPA or better;
- Demonstrate attributes and skill needed to become an effective educator in higher education;
- Nominated by a faculty member (each faculty member may nominate one student per academic year)
Once a student is nominated, the chair of the Selection Committee will notify the student and invite the nominee to submit an application including a personal statement, via SU’s Award Management portal with a due date of November 15th.
The selection committee will be formed during the fall, prior to November 15th. The chair of each department represented on the list of honorees will be invited (available on a plaque in the Janet Dudley-Eshbach Faculty Center in the academic commons) to appoint a faculty member from their department to serve on the selection committee. The committee will review the applications and nominations and meet on reading day to choose a recipient. The scholarship will be awarded in January and recognized at an SUF event in the spring.
