Beta Alpha Psi recently sent several students to Las Vegas to participate in the National Meeting. While there, they were awarded Gold Chapter status placing the Iota Pi chapter in the top 3.2% of all AACSB-accredited business schools worldwide. In addition, they also placed second in the Best Practices competition, winning a total of $3,500 to support the operations of the chapter.

On May 31- June 1, Dr. Memo Diriker conducted a comprehensive audit of the international programs at the Babes-Bolyai University School of Economics and Management (UBBFSEGA) in Cluj, Romania. The audit was conducted on behalf of the Network of International Business Schools (NIBS).
Earlier in May, Diriker served as the senior business plan competition judge at the 30th Annual NIBS Conference held in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. He was also recognized as one of the original founders of NIBS 30 years ago.
Drs. Leonard Arvi, Herman Manakyan, Kashi Khazeh’s expanded abstract of the paper “Estimated impact of Ukraine war on exchange rate risk of multinational enterprises operating in emerging markets” was presented (by invitation) at the International Academy of Business and Economics 2023 conference on June 9.

On May 10, Dr. E. Patrick McDermott spoke to the Labor and Employment Relations Association, Boston Chapter, on the topic of Access and Opportunity in Labor Relations.
On May 26, McDermott and his wife were guests of the Romanian Embassy in Washington, DC, for a celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Romania-U.S. Fulbright Program. A former Fulbright Scholar in Romania, he continues to screen the Romanian law school applicants seeking U.S. based law school and graduate school Fulbright Scholarships. June 20, McDermott met with the staff of the Japan Institute of Labour and Policy Training at their headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. This organization is a Japanese government agency in the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare that advises the Japanese leadership on its industrial relations policies and employment law. His presentation was titled “Current Issues in U.S. Industrial Relations and Employment Law.” He was honored to find that the Institute library held his 1988 book on employment arbitration, and the staff referenced it in the discussions.
On June 22, McDermott lectured at a leading Japanese university, Hitosubashi University,一橋大学 , Tokyo, Japan. His lecture was titled “COVID and Creative Destruction – The Use of Online Video Mediation to Resolve Employment Discrimination Complaints at the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission.”
These lectures we in addition to McDermott’s representation of the PSB on a University of Maryland Smith College of Business program where he visited a range of businesses in Tokyo, Osaka, Yokahama and other cities as part of faculty development in international business.
The June 2023 second edition of Mediation: Skills and Techniques, a textbook used in in law school courses, featured Dr. McDermott’s EEOC research on online video mediation in its chapter on the recent trends in the adoption Online Dispute Resolution.
A study co-authored by Drs. Simbarashe Pasirayi, Patrick Fennell and Kayla Follmer, recently published in the scholarly journal Business and Society under the title “#Activism: Investor Reactions to Corporate Sociopolitical Activism,” focused on 260 incidents of “corporate sociopolitical activism” (CSA) on Twitter.
Dr. David P. Weber’s 2023 research on gender and white-collar crime has been featured by a variety of practitioner publications. The research finds that women are undercounted and comprise a majority of embezzlement cases in the United States, using sentencing data for a decade across all 94 U.S. District Courts. Fraud Intelligence Magazine published a story “More than Equal – Female Financial Criminals,” and American Banker published a story “Why are more women convicted of embezzlement than men?” In addition, Weber’s alma mater, Warrington College of Business at the University of Florida, has featured the research repeatedly, including the stories “Inequality in embezzlement” and “Pink Collar Crime: A look at the demographic factors in embezzlement.” Weber’s research was also featured on a recent podcast, Fraudish, which is available on Spotify and iTunes.
