The Dave and Patsy Rommel Center for Entrepreneurship hosted a dynamic and inspiring event this summer – the Youth Innovation Academy (YIA). Held as a component of the Salisbury University Summer Enrichment Academies, the YIA brought together 11 enthusiastic students ranging from grades 6 to 12.

During this engaging week-long initiative, the participants embarked on a journey of problem-solving and innovative thinking. Their task was to tackle everyday challenges by ideating fresh and imaginative solutions. The students were also tasked with developing comprehensive marketing materials, crafting unique logos and even creating functional prototypes of their concepts.

“As a co-facilitator, I had the pleasure to witness the remarkable transformation of these 11 bright minds during the Youth Innovation Academy. From unraveling everyday challenges to envisioning inventive solutions, these students immersed themselves in the entrepreneurial spirit,” said Bryan Bourdeau, assistant director of the Rommel Center.

The apex of the YIA experience was the final pitch session. The students enthusiastically presented their refined ideas and prototypes to their own family members. This not only provided them with an opportunity to put their communication skills to the test but also gave them a taste of the real-world process of presenting ideas to potential stakeholders.

The event concluded on a celebratory note as awards were bestowed upon standout participants. The accolades included recognition for the best prototype, the best logo design and the best pitch.
