Dr. E. Patrick McDermott has been selected as a 2024-25 Distinguished Visiting Professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He will teach negotiation and constitutional law classes while assisting the academy in developing a negotiation curriculum.  As a result of this appointment, Dr. McDermott has stepped down as Management Department Chair to ensure department continuity during his appointment.  Dr. Nitya Singh is the new management department chair.

McDermott and Jim Rosenberg, partners at Abato, Rubenstein and Abato, P.A., Baltimore, will team-teach a redesigned Employee-Management Relations (MGMT 452).  The course syllabus informs the students that “this course is taught by two professors with extensive experience on both the labor and management sides of labor relations.  They have represented unions, employers, and major corporations in a wide range of industries, from sea to land.”  The students will participate in a simulated union organizing drive, collective bargaining, and an arbitration hearing.

The Management Department conducted a successful flash fund raiser to help finance the student SHRM chapter on a visit to New York City.  This was our first effort to obtain much-needed external funding.  We thank those of you who contributed.  It is not too late to contribute.

On January 9, 2024, Dr. David P. Weber published an op-ed in The Hill on the new Foreign Extortion Prevention Act, which criminalizes the demand or receipt of bribes by foreign officials from public corporations or U.S. domestic concerns, as well as those indirectly acting on their behalf. This law, for the first time, punishes the “demand side” of foreign corruption and bribery to address the longstanding loophole in the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which only punishes the “supply side” of bribery by public corporations. The new law will be enforced by the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where Dr. Weber formerly served as the Chief Investigator.  You can read the piece here:  Read More

The Conversation, a nonprofit reporting organization, has announced an investigative journalism project co-directed by Dr. David P. Weber and two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Jake Bernstein. Their first investigation will concern the gift card economy and fraud crisis, which play a major role in tens of millions of dollars in fraud against vulnerable adults and elders across the United States each day. They intend, for the first time, to tell the story of how the gift card industry was created, why it happened, and how the industry has evaded financial regulation. The story will be edited by Kurt Eichenwald, who spent two decades as a senior writer at The New York Times, where he was a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is also a two-time winner of the George Polk Award, an Emmy Award nominee, and the author of six non-fiction books, including “The Informant!”, which was later turned into a major motion picture starring Matt Damon.  The project is expected to be published during the spring 2024 semester. You can read more about the investigative work of the Conversation here:  Read More
