It was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. The 2024 National Black History Month Theme is “African Americans and the Arts” spanning the many impacts Black Americans have had on visual arts, music, cultural movements, and more.
