INTERN SPOTLIGHT: Makayla Hartzell

Makayla Hartzell
  • Hometown: Bangor, PA
  • Major(s): International Business and Spanish
  • Fun fact about me: I studied abroad in Malaga, Spain!
  • Name of internship host and location: ArtsQuest in Bethlehem, PA
  • When did you complete your internship? Summer 2023
  • How did you find it? I found it on the company’s website.
  • What was your role and/or some duties? I was the Sponsorship Intern. My responsibilities were to make sales calls to local restaurants to obtain new dining partnerships, along with coordinating with current sponsors to ensure they received all the benefits of their partnership. During an eleven-day music festival, I was responsible for “The Street Team,” which included seven other interns, and our duty was to disperse branded merchandise for the event sponsors.
  • Why this particular internship or organization?  I applied to ArtsQuest because it is a company that is constantly working to bring the community together through arts and cultural events. They have been responsible for major economic growth in the area by turning a once abandoned steel company into a place people now want to come and spend their time. ArtsQuest has a strong mission statement, which they truly live by each day. Their previous and current efforts to help and provide the community with all they have made me feel proud to be a part of an organization such as ArtsQuest.
  • What was your experience like (favorite part)? My favorite experience during my internship was working at Musikfest, which is an eleven-day free music festival that attracted more than 1,330,000 people. The last day of the festival I was able to go to the Train concert and then watch a fireworks display, which concluded the 2023 Musikfest.
  • How has this experience helped you? This experience has helped me create connections and build professional relationships with an amplitude of local business leaders while at the same time learning the ins and outs of a non- profit business.
  • What’s next for you? I have no plans set in stone yet, but I hope to work for a company that I will feel proud to be a part of while utilizing my two majors; and hopefully travel.
  • Advice for other students: Remain open to all opportunities you are presented with throughout your college career, along with building relationships with your professors. I believe every opportunity teaches you things about yourself you otherwise may have never learned. As for your professors, they have years of experience in the field you may want to enter and can help guide you in the direction you want to go.
  • Kudos to PSB:  I would like to thank The Perdue School of Business and its professors for providing me with all necessary resources to find an internship along with the tools to be successful throughout the duration of my internship.
