Let’s talk lithium-ion battery safety!
Lithium-ion batteries are in all types of devices we use daily. From cell phones, laptops, electric bikes, scooters, toothbrushes and backup batteries, it seems they are everywhere. When used correctly, these batteries offer a valuable service, but there could be a risk of fire or injury if uncertified batteries or chargers are used. Here are a few tips on how you can stay safe:
- Purchase only batteries and chargers that are listed by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory, such as UL. This proves they have been tested and are deemed safe.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on how to use and charge devices.
- Stop charging your device when it is fully charged.
- Do not leave devices in the direct sun, as this may lead to overheating.
- If the battery is damaged, discontinue use and recycle appropriately.
- Keep devices that are charging away from combustibles or items that can easily catch fire, such as bedding, clothing or couches.
- Never charge devices near doors, as this could block essential exits.
