The SU Book Discussion Program at the Eastern Correctional Institution (ECI) in Westover, MD is looking for faculty, staff and student (all majors) volunteers. Please join us for an Interest Meeting on Tuesday, September 10 at 5:30pm at the Philosophy House (1013 Camden Avenue) to learn more about this transformative and gratifying experience!
In a nutshell: Each discussion group is typically led by 1-2 volunteers who choose a book to read and meet at ECI with a small group of inmates to discuss it. The groups meet once a week for about six weeks per semester (volunteers should plan on a 3-hour weekly time commitment and are expected to participate in both the fall and spring semesters). Training and security clearances are required and facilitated by SU and ECI staff. You will find additional information online.
What ECI participant Eric D. says about the program: “The Book Discussion Group provides a much needed, progressive platform for the exchange of ideas and healthy dialogue between a diverse and often marginalized population. Volunteers assist in creating a stimulating and thriving environment which serves to ease rehabilitation and to create a more sustainable society as a whole.”
Please email Dr. Aurélie Van de Wiele (axvandewiele@salisbury.edu) with any questions about the Interest Meeting or participation in the program.
We hope to see you on September 10 at 5:30pm at the Philosophy House!
