Last semester our SHRM chapter was able to travel to NYC to learn more about the different aspects of HR that one may not be able to get in the classroom. Students were able to tour the Roosevelt House and meet with William Herbert at Hunter College (National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions) in which they talked about the labor laws and the union workers in NY/ the USA. From there, they went to visit the Local Union No. 3 IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) where they met the business manager Chris Erikson. The students were able to get more insight about the importance of the unions in the electrical workers as a tradeĀ and as their union. From there, they attended a Statue of Liberty Cruise, an off-Broadway show of the office as well as the Summit One Vanderbilt looking at NYC from above. This experience has given students more insight into the HR profession as well as expand their knowledge of many different important HR topics.
