Salisbury, MD — The Salisbury University Department of Economics organized a professional and networking trip to Washington, D.C., led by Professor Silvana Chambers, the adviser to the Economics Club, joined by Economic students from the Perdue School and Data Science students from the Henson School. On Thursday, October 17, 2024, the students had the opportunity to visit two prominent federal agencies: the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, Maryland.
Students engaged with the Director of the BEA and the Director of Census Bureau, as well as other economists to explore how economic data is collected, analyzed, and used to inform national policy and critical business decisions.
The following Friday, the group participated in a lunch and networking session in Washington D.C. with several Salisbury University alumni who shared their career experiences and offered guidance on transitioning into the professional world. This opportunity allowed students to build connections with alumni working in various economic fields.
SU students also visited Georgetown University’s Data Science Department. This visit was made possible by Sarah Chambers, a current graduate student at Georgetown and a Perdue School and Data Science alumnus. The students explored the offices where vital statistics are collected and analyzed. The panel discussion highlighted the relevance of programming courses required for all mathematics, statistics, and data science majors at Salisbury University.
“I’m grateful to the Econ Club and our generous hosts for sharing their time, insights, and
experiences, making the trip both educational and inspiring. I especially appreciated gaining deeper
insight into the field of economics while exploring both career options and possibilities for further
academic study.” – Claudio Garcia, Economics Major
