Visit DC on a Networking trip
Salisbury University mathematics students specializing in statistics joined ECON club members for a professional networking trip to Washington, D.C. The trip was organized by Dr. Chambers from the Economics Department, along with Drs. Cai and Holdai from the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
On Thursday, October 17, students visited the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, MD. Our group toured the Bureau of Economic Analysis and had the opportunity to ask questions of its Director, Dr. Vipin Arora. This was followed by a panel discussion with current young professionals working at the BEA. The students learned how economic and census data are collected and analyzed, and how this data is used to help the government make informed decisions about national policies and business. Students and faculty also met with the Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, Rob Santos.
On Friday, October 18, the group enjoyed a lunch and networking session in Washington, D.C., with several Salisbury University alumni, including Susan Steward (2009), Nick Feehley (2020), and Sarah Chambers (2024). They shared their experiences from various stages of their careers, including graduate school and their roles as young professionals in government and business agencies.
In the afternoon, Salisbury University students visited the Data Science and Analytics department at Georgetown University. This visit was made possible by Sarah Chambers, a current graduate student and alumnus of the Perdue and Henson Schools. Students learned about the various tracks offered by the Data Science program. Salisbury University provides strong training in mathematics and computer science, effectively preparing students for graduate studies in data science.
