Major: Business Economics

Name of Internship host and location: InFocus Financial Advisors, Salisbury Maryland.

When did you complete your internship: Fall 2024 – Spring 2025

How did you find it:
I spoke to various Alumni and friends who have attended Salisbury University and they put me into contact with InFocus. I attended the Meet the Firms event in September and spoke to members of InFocus in person. They extended me an interview invitation shortly after.

Role/Duties:
Finance Intern. Build, revise, and present Annual Review Analysis to lead financial advisors used in client meetings. Render planning recommendations and create asset allocation recommendations based on clients’ needs, age, risk tolerance, and tax implications. Conduct regular economic research used in weekly investment committee meetings to determine tactical portfolio rebalances. Produce and prepare documents used in weekly meetings focused on client financial planning.

Why this internship:
This internship provides me with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a small firm, where the impact of each task is clearly visible. It allows me to understand the foundational work that goes into operating a financial advisory firm.

My experience:
What I enjoy most about this internship is arriving at the office each day to tackle new challenges and tasks. Each client brings unique needs and obstacles, making every day a valuable learning experience. Our intern meetings are particularly beneficial, as they provide a space to ask our lead financial advisors for guidance and to discuss any questions we have about our tasks or future career paths.

How this experience has helped me:
This experience at InFocus has taught me how to navigate a professional setting, from how to present myself to developing business relationships. Everyone at the firm works collaboratively toward a shared goal; having the opportunity to experience this level of teamwork will be instrumental to my future career.

What’s next:
I will be graduating this spring, and I plan to complete various certifications to become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) in the future.

Advice for other students:
Stand out! Acquiring a job or internship in the world of finance, as in many other business industries, is highly competitive. If you can make your skills, experiences, and personality stand out among others, you’ll have a greater chance of securing the position you want. Meet as many people as possible and take on new opportunities that set you apart.
