Greetings Sea Gulls,
Mark your calendars for the launch of the SU Cycles “Pilot” Bike Share Program, Friday, January 31st 12:00-2:00pm at Sea Gull Square’s Indoor Bike Storage Area.
Each year, during the month of May, after Spring Graduation, the SUPD goes around campus and collects any unclaimed/discarded bikes. These bikes are stored in a shed on campus for one year. If the bikes are still unclaimed after one year, SUPD has the right to discard (scrap metal recycling) these bikes. Last semester, through the Green Fund, an undergraduate student proposed repurposing the unclaimed/discarded bikes that SUPD collects. Funding was awarded by the Green Fund Committee to “pilot” this bike share program during the Spring ’25 semester. In a partnership with the SUPD and the Office of Sustainability, 15 unclaimed/discarded bikes were collected and repaired by Terry’s Bike Shop. These bikes along with bike helmets and U-locks will be provided to 15 students this semester at no cost! But hurry, bikes will be provided to students on a first come, first served basis.
The SU Cycles “Pilot” Bike Share Program aims to promote adaptive reuse of materials, provide a service to the greater SU community (transportation), and reduce carbon emissions. SU Cycles will operate slightly different from a traditional bike share program. Instead of a student checking a bike out for one hour or one day, SU Cycles allows students to check out a bike for one full semester at no cost! All that’s needed to reserve a bike is a borrower’s Gull Card, signed liability form, and contact information.
If you are in need of a bike to get across campus, traveling back and forth to your off campus apartment, or traveling downtown to attend events on the weekends, please stop by Sea Gull Square’s Indoor Bike Storage Area on Friday, January 31st from 12:00-2:00pm to reserve a SU Cycles bike for the semester!
