Fun fact about me: I have had the chance to visit five countries so far – with many more on my bucket list!
Name of internship host and location: JPMorganChase
When: 2024 Summer Analyst (Jun ’24 – Aug ‘24)
How I found it: My journey at JPMorganChase began not through an internship application, but rather a competitive case study challenge at the firm. Having been assigned to a team of five students from universities nationwide, we were tasked with developing an acquisition strategy for Morgan Health, JPMorgan’s healthcare arm. The idea was to analyze acquisition targets and create an investment thesis for healthcare companies that, if acquired, would enhance the firms’ employee healthcare benefits. Our team’s compelling pitch earned us a spot in the final round at the firm’s Texas headquarters, where we not only had the opportunity to present to C-Suite executives, but also learn about and interview for internship positions. This competition served as my entry into the internship program.
My role and duties: The summer internship program at JPMorgan Chase is highly structured, with summer analysts being placed on various teams within the firm based on interests and availability. As a summer analyst, I was placed into the Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) segment of the bank, with my team specializing in regulatory risk. My daily responsibilities included collaborating with the associate and VP on my team to develop and update Excel-based risk models that identified regulatory concerns across JPMorgan and its partner institutions. I was also expected to regularly prepare pitch decks highlighting key regulatory metrics relevant to our team, and present these during our weekly meetings to keep our global team informed of any developments.
Beyond these core responsibilities, I also had the opportunity to lead a cross-functional project with four other interns, where we identified and presented operational synergies between our respective teams to the relevant Managing Directors.
Why this particular internship or organization: I am drawn to JPMorgan for its exceptional early career programs, as the firm provides a meaningful hands-on experience for early career professionals like me. Whether it was the case study competition where the firm gave us visibility in front of C-Suite executives, or the internship where coffee chats were encouraged, the firm’s welcoming atmosphere is an ideal environment for professional development.
Favorite part: What truly set this internship apart was the level of autonomy granted to summer analysts by our teams and, by extension, the firm. My team took the initiative to understand my learning objectives before the internship began and tailored my duties to align with my interests. For instance, knowing my enthusiasm for financial modeling, my team provided me with exposure to daily Excel modeling tasks. Additionally, while working with Excel formulas was quite exciting, I must admit that the weekly networking luncheons were definitely a close second in terms of my favorite highlight!
How this experience has helped me: This internship experience has been remarkable, enhancing both my technical financial knowledge and professional capabilities. Regular interactions with colleagues and presentations to Managing Directors have significantly strengthened my communication and interpersonal skills – both of which are crucial attributes in the business world. The mentorship and career guidance were similarly invaluable to my professional development, as my coworkers were always ready to have a coffee chat, and this has helped me become more confident in my career plans post-graduation.
What’s next: As for next steps post-graduation, I’m excited to return to JPMorgan Chase as a 2025 summer analyst in a new role. After my internship this summer, I will be pursuing graduate studies. My long-term goal is to establish a career in banking after completing my education.
Advice for other students: One of the best pieces of advice that I can offer is to get involved in a variety of extracurricular activities. These experiences do more than just enhance your resume: they will help you develop marketable skills and make you a well-rounded candidate. During my Superday interviews, many of my extracurricular activities became talking points, as they allowed me to highlight problem-solving abilities, leadership experiences, and teamwork in activities I had taken part in. You never know which experiences will set you apart, so take advantage of every opportunity to grow both personally and professionally.
