The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is excited to kick off “April is for Access,” our annual campus-wide initiative dedicated to spreading disability awareness, promoting inclusion, and fostering belonging for all members of our university community. This year’s theme is “Inclusion Starts with Access”!
Why Accessibility Matters?
Ensuring accessibility is not just about compliance—it’s about creating an environment where everyone can fully participate and thrive. From physical spaces to digital platforms, accessibility removes barriers, increases engagement, and enhances the experience for all students, faculty, and staff.
The Importance of Digital Accessibility
With the increasing reliance on digital tools in education, ensuring our websites, course materials, and online resources are accessible is more important than ever. Digital accessibility benefits individuals with disabilities while also improving usability for everyone.
Introducing the Digital Accessibility Work Group
To strengthen our commitment, we are launching the Digital Accessibility Work Group, a campus-wide collaboration between the Offices of Digital Strategy (web office), Disability Resource Center, Information Technology, and Instructional Design & Delivery. This group will lead efforts to ensure our compliance with the Department of Justice (DOJ) Ruling by April 24, 2026! For more information, resources, and training opportunities, please visit SU’s newly created Digital Accessibility website!
What does this mean for our campus?
All USM schools must meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Version 2.1 for all digital content distributed either publicly or privately (behind a login), which includes email communications, electronic documents (Word, PowerPoint, PDF), website, social media, and SU Today posts!
