The American Red Cross of National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region is actively recruiting volunteers. Recently, the eastern shore has been divided into smaller regions to facilitate volunteers’ response to calls so if you live in one of the designated regions below then you only respond to those areas. There are multiple different opportunities to volunteer for ages 15 and up, no matter your education level, or physical abilities, you are needed. Disaster Action Teams (DAT) are the teams that are mainly responsible for responding to events such as single or multi-family house fires but may be called upon in large disasters. Whether it is to provide food, coordinate a new location to stay, wrap them in a blanket, or just give a hug, these are your local volunteers supporting friends and family in their worst hours. Other volunteer opportunities consist of blood drives, blood bank transportation services, translation services, shelter services, mental health support services, disaster health services, or there may be opportunities to serve remotely as well in addition to IT and communications teams needed when larger disasters occur. The next local in-person training is on April 24th in Salisbury and there are online courses to be completed by that time. If you think you are ready to get started, click the link below to apply for your local DAT volunteer opportunities. Once you apply, you will receive a phone call from a reviewer to discuss potential volunteer roles and to get you connected with the correct local chapter.
