Edward “Duke” Ellington deemed these concerts “the most important thing I’ve ever done.” Featuring a standard jazz band, tap dancer and the dynamic voices of the American Spiritual Ensemble, the Ellington Sacred Concerts were characterized by American jazz critic Gary Giddins as “bringing the Cotton Club revue to the church.”
