Hello SU Staff and Faculty,

Welcome back to campus!  The Fall ’24 semester is starting in just a few more days and the students are returning to campus with high energy and excitement!  Before classes begin, I want to provide an update on our new recycling initiatives in our major academic and administrative buildings.

Over the summer months we successfully installed new office deskside liner-free mini-trashcans and recycle bins in the following buildings: Perdue Hall, Conway Hall, Henson Hall, and Maggs Gym.  These buildings join Holloway Hall, Devilbiss Hall, GSU, The Commons (2nd floor), Maintenance Building, Support Services, IT, and Horticulture that were installed during the Spring ’24 semester and Fulton Hall which served as our pilot study during the Fall ’23 semester.

In all of the above mentioned buildings, Facilities Services will no longer empty the deskside office bins each evening.  Instead individuals at their own offices’ are asked to service their own deskside recycle bins and mini-trashcans on an “as needed” basis.  Staff and faculty are asked to transport their individual deskside office bins down the hall and empty them into larger communal bins.  Facilities Services have placed large communal recycle bins and trash bins in strategic locations in these buildings to minimize the distance faculty and staff must travel to service their deskside bins.  Facilities Services will continue to empty the large communal trash bins each evening and the Horticultures-Recycling Program will service the communal recycling bins 2-3 times per week.

Pre- and post-installation waste audits have revealed that SU has increased our recycling rate by 25% in our office settings in these buildings.  As everyone becomes more comfortable with our new recycling roles, we expect our recycling rate to continue to increase.  Please watch the short video below to learn more about SU’s new recycling initiatives.
