Bookshelf with books and learning games

Several years ago, the SU Libraries began investigating ways to support SU faculty, staff and students who also care for children and vulnerable adults. We researched what other academic libraries were doing and surveyed the campus community, and the results showed a significant need for family-friendly spaces and resources.  In response, the SU Libraries began offering Study Buddy Playtime Packs, backpacks filled with age-appropriate books, toys and activities to help keep children entertained while their caregivers work in the building. Next, we got to work on designing a designated space for families. We again reviewed the survey results showing what caregivers would find most useful, and we sought donations of children’s books, DVDs, games and activities. We were able to use some existing furniture, technology and equipment from the SU Libraries’ collection, and library staff had fun purchasing and assembling new items, including easels, tiny chairs and tables, beanbag chairs, and, of course, bookcases.

In February 2024, the Salisbury University Libraries opened our Family Study Room.  On the first floor of the Guerrieri Academic Commons, this room is conveniently located near a building entrance/exit, as well as restrooms and the private lactation room. The room can be reserved by current Salisbury University students, faculty and staff any time the Library Service Desk is open, and it includes:

  • Space for up to two families at once
  • Three computer stations
  • Children’s books, toys, art supplies, puzzles, games and more
  • A microwave oven, refrigerator, television and DVD player
  • Sound-reduction panels to limit concerns over disrupting others

In the future, we plan to follow up with folks who have used the space as well as respondents to our original survey to gather feedback on improving the space. If you or someone you know could benefit from this space, we invite you to reserve it online. Help us spread the word that the SU Libraries are taking care of caregivers and their families.
