Salisbury University (SU) is proud to announce that its Economics (BA) and Business Economics (BS) programs have officially earned the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) designation starting fall 2024. This significant recognition positions these programs within a growing category of academic disciplines that emphasize analytical, technical, and data-driven skills essential for today’s dynamic job market. SU’s STEM Economics program is one of only four STEM-designated undergraduate economics programs in Maryland, alongside the University of Maryland—College Park, Johns Hopkins University, and Goucher College.

Under this new STEM designation, both programs emphasize economic theory, econometrics, quantitative analysis, and statistical methods.  As a STEM program, the curriculum will integrate training in data analysis, research, and economic modeling to equip students with competitive, market-ready skills. In addition, international students graduating from these STEM-designated programs are eligible for up to three years of Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the United States. This extended period allows graduates to gain valuable work experience, further enhancing their professional development.
